The Beringer TV Commercials
Spoofing Steven Spurrier’s famous Paris wine tasting of 1976, writer-producer-director-cinematographer Dennis F. Stevens takes a break between filming his award winning TV commercial for the Beringer winery, in 1976.
Stevens was hopeful that close friend of Robert Lawrence Balzer, actor Burgess Meredith, would play one of the wine tasters in the Beringer TV commercial, but the winery’s advertising agency and the actor’s agent could not agree on the money.  Nevertheless, Burgess showed up on the set to lend support to Stevens.
Stevens snapped this picture of his then girlfriend, Emaline Henry (best known for playing Amanda Bellows in “I Dream of Jeanne”) during filming of the Beringer TV commercials, in 1976.  Photo was taken in Sausalito.  That’s the famous Trident Restaurant on the water, in the background.

TV director Duke Goldstone also showed up to lend support for the TV commercials spoofing the Steven Spurrier 1976 Judgment of Paris wine tasting.

This is the script for the chardonnay TV commercial, where the wine snobs think they are sniffing and tasting the great white Burgundy wines of France – when it is revealed that the winning wine is a Beringer Napa Valley chardonnay.

This time the wine snobs are guessing which of the great reds of Bordeaux they are sniffing and tasting, only to have it revealed that the winning wine is a Beringer Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
